At St Mary’s our teaching of science is taken from the Lancashire County Council science scheme of work which in turn is taken from the National Curriculum programme of study for science.
Briefly, Science is divided into four areas:
· Scientific Investigation – the children are encouraged to observe, to ask questions, to make predictions, to measure and to carry out a fair test during the course of practical work.
· Life and Living Processes – Looking at plants, animals, humans and their environment.
· Materials and Properties – What are things made of? What happens if we heat them or cool them down?
· Physical Processes – These cover electricity, magnetism, forces, light, sound and the Earth in space.
Through building key foundational knowledge and concepts, pupils are encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They are encouraged to understand how key knowledge and concepts can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes.
